Most noted for her punk-inspired creations, Westwood designed a series of outfits for the dancer’s prominent performance that included tartan kilts and plaid legwarmers, as well as a stunning silk taffeta gown adapted from her Spring 2014 Gold Label collection, first shown in Paris. Dancer Kathrin Menzinger wore one of the romantically-styled gowns in her performance of the waltz with partner Vadim Garbuzov, who wore an all-black design consisting of silk trousers and a double-breasted jacket.

Westwood’s work with the ballet has some personal significance as her husband, Andreas Kronthaler, was born in Austria and has fond childhood memories of the New Year’s performance, as noted on fashion, beauty and retail news site WWD.com. Kronthaler, as the fashion house’s creative director, said “I feel honored that we were asked to design the costumes for the New Year’s Concert ballet, as it holds such tradition for me”.

The New Year’s Concert is a popular event and marks one of the highlights during European river cruises through Vienna at this time. Held by the Vienna Philharmonic at the famed Wiener Musikverein concert hall, the annual performance stands as a great example of Austrian talent. The dance performance takes place during the intermission of the classical music concert, with this year also featuring a special screening of a film depicting dancers performing in a number of past and present Westwood creations in a beautiful mix of fashion and dance.

The New Year’s concert took place on the 1st January 2014 and was conducted by Israeli Argentine-born pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim. This year marked the 74th performance and was shown on television in over 80 countries for those unable to visit the city or attain tickets.
