TripAdvisor has released its annual list of the top ten zoos in the world, which has seen Prague rank at number four.

This means that Prague Zoo has climbed three places since 2014, jumping ahead of its UK competitor Chester Zoo, which now sits at the attraction’s previous slot of number seven. Prague was only beaten by San Diego Zoo, Loro Parque in Spain and Singapore Zoo, which also makes it the second best in Europe. Tiergarten Schönbrunn also ranked in the top five and is another zoo which can be visited while on a 2016 river cruise in Europe.

The list is determined by an algorithm, which is based on the reviews left by tourists who use the travel website to rate accommodation and attractions. This does not take into account the opinions of zoo professionals, but does go by customer satisfaction as demonstrated in the reviews from the past 12 months.

Prague Zoo now in top five

In an article published by the Prague Post, Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor, said “The Travelers' Choice awards are recognising the top zoos and aquariums around the world that are the favourites of the TripAdvisor community. Travelers visiting these award-winning attractions can get a close look and learn about the magnificent creatures that inhabit the world around us.”

Prague Zoo has been open since 1931 and is located on the banks of the Vltava River, occupying approximately 60 hectares. The zoo is home to almost 5,000 animals, boasting 690 species, 133 of which are listed as critically endangered. Working hard on conservation, Prague Zoo has been very successful in a number of breeding projects, with visitors often able to see young animals soon after they have been born.

In 2014, Prague Zoo was the second most visited attraction in the Czech Republic, with more than 1.4 million visitors coming through its doors.
