Art Basel in full swing
The premier international art show Art Basel 2015 is now in full swing, having opened its doors today. The show, which runs from the 18th until the 21st June this year, is renowned for its promotion of modern and contemporary art.
Many art lovers on June river cruises in the area will be visiting the event, with the only other chance to see art of such calibre at the show’s other two locations, Hong Kong and Miami Beach in the US.
Art Basel showcases works from around 300 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia without discrimination, featuring works from established masters of the contemporary and Modern art genre through to emerging talents.
‘Olympics of the Art World’
The event has been described as the ‘Olympics of the Art World’, showing the work of more than 4,000 artists who work in a range of mediums including paint, sculpture, installation, video, print, photography and performance.
The show also features a full program of events with symposiums, films, and artist talks, all for visitors to enjoy and learn more about the art they are looking at and current movements. See the below video for a brief look at highlights from last year’s show.
Approximately 90,000 art lovers visit Art Basel each year, looking to see what interesting works both their favourite and new, up and coming artists have created. This year’s event calendar includes a large-scale, interactive installation on Messeplatz among other new and exciting works.
The show was founded by gallerists in 1970 and works to support emerging artists and the development and promotion of visual arts. It is also a member of "Top Events of Switzerland", an association comprised of eight events of the highest quality across the country, so be sure to work Art Basel into your exciting Europe river cruise itinerary.
