Budapest named second best city in the world
Hungary’s Budapest shares the enviable second place spot with the pretty Italian city of Florence; both of these destinations closely followed San Miguel de Allende in Mexico, which was voted as the top city in the world according to Condé Nast readers.
Budapest came out with a Readers’ Choice Rating of 83.8 which, when considering the top spot has a rating of 84.6, means there was very little between the three most popular cities. The Readers’ Choice Awards survey is held by the publication every year to determine the best destinations in the world and features categories for the top islands, cities and resorts.
The latest instalment of the awards, which are now in their 26th year, have aimed to provide a more comprehensive survey than ever before, with 1.3 million votes cast.
The results suggest 2013 European river cruises may have been especially popular, with a number of European cities taking the top positions. Budapest, Salzburg, Vienna, Bruges and Prague all made the top 25 and are all destinations for stop-offs on some of the best river cruises in Europe, so it is little wonder how their popularity has rocketed. Of these cities, Budapest, Salzburg and the Austrian capital of Vienna all made the top ten list of most popular destinations to visit, not just in Europe but in the world.
It comes as no surprise that Budapest was so highly ranked, with readers’ comments describing the city as a “classic masterpiece” that gives off a “different feeling than other European cities”. Its grand architecture and expert dining make it a favoured destination for travellers of all ages and interests, and the city’s popularity shows no sign of slowing.
