Emerald Waterways Celebrates Christening of Emerald Liberté
At Emerald Waterways, we are thrilled to announce that Emerald Liberté, the third in our trio of new Star-Ships for 2017, was christened on Sunday 1st October in Lyon, France – marking the launch of our first dedicated French river ship.
During the official Christening ceremony at the beginning of October, Australian travel expert and cruise director Maxine Collins was named the ship’s official Godmother, an honorary title intended to bring good fortune to new ships before they enter service.
Mrs Collins, who has worked in the industry for nearly 30 years, was delighted to accept sponsorship of the new Emerald Waterways ship, saying: “It’s a real honour and a privilege to be Godmother of this beautiful ship, Emerald Liberté, and I wish all who sail on her safe passage and a wonderful journey through the magnificent south of France.”
Speaking at the Christening ceremony, David Winterton, Global Brand Curator for Emerald Waterways, commented on why Mrs Collins was chosen as the official Godmother for the new ship: “We’re delighted to have Maxine as the Godmother of Emerald Liberté, the latest Star-Ship in our rapidly growing fleet. She has led many guests around the world during her 28 years with the company, and was a standout choice for the role of Godmother.”
Built in the prestigious Den Breejen shipyard in the Netherlands, Emerald Liberté is a new addition to the Emerald Waterways fleet, and our first Star-Ship built exclusively for the rivers of France. Commenting on the new ship, Mr Winterton said: “Emerald Liberté has been custom-built for cruising through the southern France rivers, Rhône & Saône, providing an authentic taste of Gallic life. Whilst offering our guests modern luxury at an affordable price.”
While Emerald Liberté has been custom-built with the rivers of France in mind, the ship features the signature style, comfort and elegance of other Star-Ships in the Emerald Waterways fleet – from its clean lines and contemporary designer flourishes, to innovative on-board features such as drop-down balcony windows, and a heated swimming pool which is transformed into state-of-the-art cinema on an evening.
The ship boasts 70 generously-appointed guest suites, with a capacity of 138 passengers. Add to that a crew-to-guest ratio of 1:3, and Emerald Liberté guarantees the same exceptional service guests have come to expect across our award-winning fleet of Star-Ships.
Emerald Liberté will offer luxury river cruising on the Rhône and Saône rivers in southern France, allowing guests the opportunity to experience the spectacular Provence and Burgundy regions over an 8-night itinerary between Arles and Lyon, or vice versa.
The ship will make daily calls to port in several wonderful destinations over the 8-day cruise, including historic Avignon, with its magnificent Palais des Papes heritage site; Arles, whose Romanesque architecture is among the finest in Europe; Macon, Tournon, Beaune and Chalon-Sur-Saône, each renowned for their viticulture heritage; and Lyon, the celebrated culinary capital of the world.
Elevating the experience to a new level, guests will also enjoy a variety of cultural encounters and immersive excursions, including a Provençal-style on-board dinner presented by acclaimed local chef, Fabien Morreale.
The christening of Emerald Liberté marked the third official launch of a new Emerald Waterways ship in 2017, with the Emerald Destiny christened by Canadian newscaster, Coleen Christie in May, and the Emerald Radiance christened by UK travel agent Gill Williams at an official launch event in Porto in June. The Emerald Waterways fleet now totals seven Star-Ships – impressive, given we only started in 2014.
