Germany's popularity grows after World Cup win


After their win in the 2014 World Cup, it is thought that the country will be looking to capitalise on the publicity and encourage more visitors.

The German tourism board recently announced a list of the top 100 landmarks, sites and destinations, many of which are visited on summer river cruise holidays that pass through the picturesque landscape, highlighting the many reasons for visitors to come to Germany.

A bumper year for Germany

Following on from the World Cup win, Germany can also expect a boost in visitor numbers this year with the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. As such, the Berlin Wall, which was voted as the 5th most popular site in Germany according to a poll of 11,000 visitors, is expected to gain as large a number of visitors as it has ever seen this year, with the anniversary taking place in November.

Other landmarks on the list include Cologne Cathedral at position three, the Black Forest at number seven and the famed Neuschwanstein Castle taking the top spot as visitors’ favourite landmark in Germany. The Castle stands as one of the most prominent features in the whole of the country, having been built for King Ludwig II as his own private retreat and has since stood as the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s Sleeping Beauty castle.

These are just a few of the reasons why so many visitors flock to Germany every year and with the increased publicity following the World Cup, it is expected that even more will be taking city breaks and escorted Danube river cruises to see this most beautiful country.
