While many families in the UK are out at the local supermarket purchasing the latest Cadbury or Lindt Easter eggs, Vienna is gearing up for its annual Easter markets and festivals that bring whole communities together. The Austrian capital looks to celebrate the Christian holiday with time old traditions made up of finely decorated eggs, sweet treats and music to attract all ages, not just the younger ones.
Vienna celebrates Easter across numerous venues around the city with the Freyung, a historic square in the Old City, to host an Easter Market to remember. Guests of spring river cruise holidays passing through the city will be able to experience the largest pile of Easter eggs in Europe as around 40,000 painted eggs are collected every year for the event. Easter roast lamb will be on offer alongside craftwork and floristry.
For another great tradition in Vienna be sure to catch the Easter Festival on Easter Sunday 20th April in the Prater. With live music, an Easter parade and much more excitement going on, the Festival really displays true Viennese tradition at this time of year.
Party at the Palace
One of the best experiences during Easter in Vienna is visiting the Schönbrunn Palace Easter Market, which is taking place between the 5th and 21st April. This market is considered a great place to visit for couples as it is regarded as one of the most romantic of all the Easter markets. Not only do guests get to wander around the exquisite Palace grounds, but there are also 60 different exhibits to explore offering all kinds of Easter delights, from decorations and crafts showcasing Austrian talent and craftsmanship to the most delectable treats.
Emerald Waterways takes to the water this month and while guests may miss out on the Easter traditions Vienna displays this year, there is still plenty of space left on their 2015 European river cruises so give them a call today to reserve your place.
