Henri Matisse exhibition opens in Bucharest at Noblesse Palace

The exhibition consists of 83 lithographs of the French painter, which were created between 1945 and 1950, and illustrate the last period of his life when he was compelled to move to Nice because of World War II and was suffering from cancer. These works are also thought to highlight the path that Matisse took when in search for happiness and creativity, with messages of love for his Russian mistress symbolised in a selection of these.

Including pieces from both the “Jazz” cycle and “Florilege des Amours” collections, it makes for great viewing, with the latter inspired by the love poems of Renaissance poet Pierre de Ronsard. Opening on 7th April, the collection will be on display until 7th June, which those visiting Bucharest on European river cruises can experience.

Celebrating the inspirational works of Matisse

The French artist was famed for using expressive language and bold bright colours, and is considered to be a protagonist of Fauvism, which was the first avant-garde movement at the turn of the century. He is also highly regarded for his treatment of the human figure, which can be seen in a number of the lithographs on display at the palace.

The Noblesse Palace was chosen as the venue for the exhibition, due to it being a fine example of Romanian architecture, which boasts both history and elegance dating back to 1881. As it is known for organising a variety of cultural events, it was considered a fitting host for the Henri Matisse exhibition.

Each Saturday, the Noblesse Palace will also hold a Rendez-vous cocktail avec Henri Matisse, which will include a private tour of the palace and exhibition, as well as food tasting for an extra charge.
