Bratislava moves up in liveability survey

Data from an in-depth study by the Economist Intelligence Unit has revealed that Bratislava is among the ten cities that have increased in terms of liveability the most, which draws upon ‘infrastructure, education, and safety’. The study by the esteemed magazine is conducted yearly and assesses locations based on a five point criteria relating to liveability, producing a definitive list of 140 cities worldwide.

A rare gem amongst the crown of European river cruises, Bratislava in Slovakia has moved up a remarkable amount in the liveability rankings. Mayor of Bratislava Milan Ftácnik has welcomed this positive news as it recognises the recent efforts the Slovakian government have been making to improve conditions in the city.

Vienna among top 10 most liveable cities

Two European cities claimed positions in the top ten: Vienna, Austria came second and Helsinki, Finland came in eighth place. Vienna has been deemed to be one of the most liveable cities once again, having won the title four times in a row in previous years.

In 2013, Vienna was crowned first place, missing out to Australian city Melbourne this year for 2014. The Economist’s survey looks at more than 200 cities around the world and takes into account a number of factors, including the social, economic and political climate of the country.

Factors effecting tourists such as transport, climate and medical care are also taken into serious consideration. Wealthier cities tend to score higher in terms of liveability as there is more money to put into industries like tourism and transport.

Both Vienna and Bratislava are popular European destinations for those travelling on board all-inclusive river cruises, therefore the exciting news that these destinations are some of the most liveable in the world can only further highlight their status as popular tourist destinations.
