Locals list Cologne’s top 10 things to do

Gerhard Richter Cologne Cathedral

A local German news site has pulled together a list of the city’s ten must-see spots for culture vultures.

On a Rhine river cruise with us, you will have free time to explore Cologne and the wonderful sights it has to offer. If you’re looking for ideas for your upcoming cruise, look no further than what the locals have to recommend – take a look at our pick of the Local’s top 10 below.

For art

Museum Ludwig – best suited to modern art fans, it is home to one of Europe’s largest collections of Pop Art. It is very close to Cologne Cathedral, opposite the Cologne Central Station.

Ebertplatz Passage – get a feel for the city’s independent art scene in the underpass surrounding Ebertplatz subway station, which is a 20-minute walk north from Cologne Cathedral. It is home to a number of galleries, including Tiefgarage and Labor Ebertplatz.

For culture

Cologne Cathedral – this towering cathedral is beautiful both inside and outside. We would recommend visiting this first so you can take your time to see everything that interests you. The south-facing stained glass window designed by Gerhard Richter is unexpected and stunning.

Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln – the city’s school of music and dance provides performances by both touring musicians and students. It is just a 15-minute walk north from Cologne Cathedral.

For shopping and a coffee

Walther König Book Store – simply the best place in Cologne for books on contemporary art and culture at an affordable price. It has a long, entwined history with the city’s art scene and is a 13-minute walk west from Cologne Cathedral.

Van Dyck Coffee – trendy coffee drinkers can relax and watch the world go by in this wonderful establishment, which is known for its flat whites made from in-store roasted beans. It is 15 minutes away from Cologne Cathedral via the 3 or 4 tram line.
