Vienna to host two art fairs this autumn

Vienna’s contemporary art credentials have been boosted this year, as the city will be holding not one, but two fairs in the next few weeks.

Viennafair has become an established contemporary art fair in the Austrian capital, with this year’s event on 8-11 October marking the 11th year of its being. It has a reputation for being an ‘International Contemporary Art Fair’ and “will stimulate the art market in Vienna with fresh ideas and concepts”, according to their website.

Previous directors of the event will also be launching a new art fair across the canal this September: viennacontemporary. As the event is being held from 24-27 September, two contemporary art fairs will be held in Vienna in just over two weeks.

The timing of the two art fairs is perfect for those who are visiting the city for a short period of time on a river cruise to Vienna. As they are of a similar subject and with 90 per cent of galleries for viennacontemporary being returning exhibitors from Viennafair, those who miss one will be able to attend the other and see much of the same artwork.

Blouartinfo spoke to Wolfgang Pelz about what it means for the city to have two very similar art fairs so close to each other in the calendar. Asking “is Vienna a big enough town for two consecutive art fairs?” Pelz replied with, "Shouldn't we rather ask: is the interest in art big enough? The answer would be yes."

Galleries from across the world that will be participating in the fairs include Fait Gallery from the Czech Republic, Dittrich & Schlechtriem from Germany, and Bernard Bouche and Caroline Smulder from France. Works from Carlo Guaita, José Pedro Croft and Kimiko Yoshida will be some of the highlights to see.

As well as the contemporary art focus, Viennafair will also be launching Viennafair Masters. It is being billed as an “International Fine Art Fair”, with classic works on display.
