Tourism body predicts record year for international tourism

So far, the first 10 months of 2014 has seen an overall increase of five per cent, reaching 978 million, with Europe experiencing a slightly lower four per cent increase. The region is the most visited in the world and continues to attract more and more tourists each year, including those on deluxe river cruises in Europe visiting the Danube, Moselle and Rhine. However, the biggest increase in tourism numbers was recorded in the Americas, with reports of an eight per cent increase.

International tourism to experience another record breaking year

It is thought that by the end of the year, more than 1.1 billion tourists will have visited an international country for at least one overnight stay, reaching an all-time high. Over the past six decades, tourism numbers have continued to increase, and it is thought that the figures will reach 1.8 billion by 2030. For example, in 1950 tourism numbers rose to 278 million, and in 1995 figures had climbed to 528 million.

Certain regions have performed better than others, with Western Europe experiencing a two per cent increase and previous reports confirming that the Czech Republic has seen a 2.5 per cent increase so far this year.

The remarkable statistics have occurred despite the terrorism threats and health scares that have befallen 2014, and will help with the global economic recovery, which still remains fragile. It has been suggested that more countries are placing value in tourism, which helps to create more jobs and improve employment rates.

By the end of January, the UNWTO will have released the statistics for the full year, and it is hoped that these will prove the predictions to be correct.
