Discover Emerald Waterways: A Q&A with Darren Birch

In the four years since Emerald Waterways first launched, we have built up a team of amazing travel industry experts who are passionate about helping you enjoy the finest river cruise experiences. From the on-board crew, ready to provide luxurious passage on many of the world’s most beautiful rivers, to the product team who dream up the amazing excursions and experiences along the way – every member of the Emerald Waterways team has the same goal, creating amazing river cruises.

So, we believe it is only fair to give you a little insight into the day-to-day lives of members of our team, learning what they do, what makes them tick, and what inspires them to continue contributing towards Emerald Waterways’ amazing river cruises.

Today, we’re chatting to Marketing Executive, Darren Birch, in a bid to discover what he gets up to at Emerald Waterways HQ, and what he loves about working in our fun and dynamic team.

Hi Darren, thanks so much for taking part in Discover Emerald Waterways. Firstly, could you tell us how you came to work for Emerald Waterways, and provide a little background to your career before joining the team?

I joined Emerald Waterways just over two years ago, initially to look after account partnerships but soon moved in to the marketing team where I became involved in the production of our brochures and mailings. Prior to Emerald Waterways, I had several roles within the travel industry as an account manager.

As a Marketing Executive, what are your main responsibilities? And how does this translate to the average working day – what would we most likely find you doing when entering the Emerald Waterways offices?

My role is busy and varied, from dealing with external printers, press and PR companies to liaising with our brilliant in-house team of designers and product specialists, gathering all the required information to put together our brochures, mailings and press advertisements. There is never a dull moment!

What is it about Emerald Waterways which keeps you passionate about your role? What makes us different to the competition?

For me, Emerald Waterways stands apart for our competition for being contemporary and innovative. For example, our on-board pool and cinema and our open-air balcony systems in our suites really put our Star-Ships in a league of their own.

Have you travelled on any Emerald Waterways river cruise itineraries? Could you tell us a little more about your experiences on-board, and the highlights of your trips?

I have been lucky enough to experience our beautiful Star-Ships on several occasions. The many highlights of mine include enjoying a delicious afternoon tea hosted in the welcoming home of a Slovakian Family during our Splendours of Europe river cruise. I also hold a special flame for the city of Amsterdam, I love the friendly vibrancy and the stunning architecture, not forgetting the cycling tour I took part in as part of our included EmeraldACTIVE programme.

Of all the excursions, EmeraldPLUS experiences and EmeraldACTIVE activities you’ve enjoyed, which is your favourite, and why? Also, are there any you haven’t experienced, but are particularly interested in?

My absolute favourite is our new EmeraldACTIVE guided canoeing experience on our Secrets of the Douro river cruise, it was amazing picking up new skills whilst taking in the stunning scenery and basking in the Portuguese sunshine.

One I am hoping to experience in the future is our canal boat tour on a ‘Batorama’ in Strasbourg as part of one of our new itineraries for 2018, The Majestic Rhine. It looks like a super way to explore the city.

A big thanks to Darren for taking part in this Q&A, and we hope you have enjoyed taking an inside look at life at Emerald Waterways. If you’d like to find out more about our luxury river cruises, visit the homepage or call us today on 0808 159 8422 and our friendly team will be happy to help you.
