European Figure Skating Championships in Budapest

Official practice is to be held on the first two days, with pairs events taking place on Friday 17th and Sunday 19th January, the last day of the championships. Welcoming the most esteemed skaters in the whole of Europe, Budapest will doubtless see a great number of visitors over the course of the week, who will also be looking to experience some of the many other popular sights the city is home to. The European Figure Skating Championships’ official website details many of the popular sites visited by guests passing through on Europe river cruise trips, as well as other useful local information.

Ice skating has become increasingly popular as a sport in Hungary and the President of the Hungarian National Skating Federation has expressed his hope that the hosting of this event will herald the start of a more active ice skating presence in the city for spectators and athletes alike. Having already hosted a number of world championships and international events across various sports including fencing in recent years (and with more to come, with the Ironman 70.3 - or ‘Half Ironman’ - coming to the city in August), Budapest looks set to further cement its serious sporting reputation through the upcoming skating spectacle.

Budapest has hosted the European Figure Skating Championships six times before this year’s event, crowning many champions, and the city is now looking to create another memorable experience for spectators and competitors, proving its capability for hosting future events. Medals are awarded across the events of men’s singles, ladies’ singles, pair skating and ice dancing and, with the championships being one of the oldest of four annual competitions held by the International Skating Union, it is among the most prestigious events of its kind in the world.

The Figure Skating Championships are just one of a number of fantastic events that take place across the continent during European river cruises with Emerald Waterways, so be sure to plan ahead to make the most of your free time during a cruise experience.
