Vienna enjoys fantastic tourism year in 2014

The city of Vienna had its best ever year for tourism in 2014, indicating a pleasant increase on the year before, much to the delight of tourism officials representing the Austrian capital.

According to the official figures, which were recently released, the city welcomed 13.5 million overnight visitors in 2014 – indicating a 6.3 per cent increase compared to 2013 to represent an all-time high. As a whole, the city welcomed a total of 6,211,000 tourists during 2014, a rise of 6.4 per cent on figures from 2013.

With international tourism accounting for around 82 per cent of the overnight stays in the city, it is thought that the objective of the Vienna Tourist Board is to increase the number of overnight stays to 18 million by 2020. With a variety of huge events, such as the 60th Eurovision Song Contest, taking place in the city to be enjoyed by those on a river cruise in 2015, this target could easily be reached and surpassed. It shows that Vienna is proving more popular than ever with visitors from all over the world.

Vienna stars in Sydney

Just one method of the Tourist Board to increase the level of visitors was recently shown in Sydney Australia, after 3D images of the city were illuminated on the city’s Opera House during a performance by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

The news puts the city of Vienna firmly in the company of the most popular destinations in Europe, and with its architecture and association with some of the world’s finest classical musicians just two of the aspects those on an elegant river cruise on the Danube can discover, this acclaim is well deserved.
