Number of visitors to Czech monuments rises in 2014

An increase of half a million people was recorded when comparing this year’s figures with those from 2013, with a total of 4.8 million tourists visiting the Czech monuments in the past 12 months. It is thought that the rise in visitors is due to a number of factors, such as the addition of special guided tours, celebrations and cultural events, which many monuments have started to offer.

This includes the opening of a large exhibition at Prague Castle’s Riding School, which is currently displaying valuable treasures from the country’s castles and country houses. Since it began on December 19th, the exhibition has already attracted 9,000 visitors and will continue to run until March 15th. More than 600 important objects telling the story of the Czech Republic’s history are on display, and aims to take visitors on a journey to understand the importance of the country’s cultural heritage.

A successful year for the Czech Republic’s national monuments

Of all the monuments managed by the National Heritage Institute, 90 per cent saw an increase in visitor numbers during 2014, with one third of these experiencing a 20 per cent increase of tens of thousands more visitors. Those that experienced a significant increase included the chateaus of Lednice, Cesky Krumlov and Konopiste, with the former being the most visited site in 2014 with 376,559 visitors recorded.

The Karlstejn castle and the Konopiste chateau, situated southwest and southeast of Prague, came in fourth and fifth place, and can be visited by those on deluxe river cruises in Europe with Emerald Waterways.

Overall, there has been a 13.3 per cent year-on-year increase in visits to the 103 historical sites run by the NPU.
