Actress, television presenter and author Julie Peasgood is a familiar face aboard the Emerald Waterways fleet, holidaying with us through Europe’s wonderful rivers. The former star of Brookside, Hollyoaks, Holby City and many more is always forthcoming about the incredible experiences she enjoys whilst cruising Europe’s beautiful waterways.
Here she discusses her experience of a recent river cruise with Emerald Waterways through the Netherlands and Belgium:
I so wish it was my birthday …it's Friday night and there are no less than five birthdays aboard Emerald Star – and Emerald Waterways deliver the best birthday greeting ever. I have plenty of experience of birthdays on board (sadly never my own) but the witty delivery and close harmonies that spring forth from this crew are second to none.
One of the best things about my ‘Netherlands and the Beauty of Belgium’ cruise is how close and loyal the entire crew seem to be. Headed up by popular Hotel Manager Albert, attentive Restaurant Manager Zikret, and vibrant Cruise Director Sheryl, everyone works as a caring, tight-knit team, and it makes a successful recipe for happy cruising.
And how can anyone not be happy wandering amongst the myriad of tulips in the Keukenhof Gardens – Europe’s largest and most beautiful spring garden. Breathtakingly beautiful, with gardens inside gardens, there are stunning swathes of more than seven million tulips – with the heady scent of hyacinths and daffodils adding fragrance to the visual displays.
For just eight weeks of the year, Keukenhof Gardens bursts into beautiful life, welcoming guests from all around the world. One of the most popular EmeraldPLUS experiences is the chance to take a guided tour through the gardens, learning from local experts about the history of tulips in the Netherlands and discovering more about the enchanting tulips on show.

“This for me is the highlight of the cruise – but the rest of the itinerary has delights in store too. Mediaeval Antwerp, with its picturesque, cobbled streets; Hoorn, where I indulge in far too much Edam cheese; the magical town of Veere in Zeeland, full of fascinating, quirky shops; and the moving serenity of Arnhem.
Not forgetting Amsterdam of course, one of my favourite cities, and where the stylish, comfortable Star begins and ends this lovely cruise, with an added off-the-menu treat of a night canal tour. I shall return – but I’ll make sure it’s on my Birthday next time…
Julie travelled on the Emerald Waterways’ Netherlands and Beauty of Belgium cruise. This eight-day round trip from Amsterdam visits a number of charming towns and cities en-route including Veere, Antwerp and Arnhem. Guests are afforded plenty of time to enjoy each of the port visits, particularly in vibrant Amsterdam.
If you are interested in visiting Keukenhof Gardens, they will be open to the public between 23 March and 21 May in 2017.
