Keukenhof Gardens opens for 66th season

This year’s opening was particularly highly anticipated due to the spectacular display of flowers which has been designed to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Vincent van Gogh’s death. The Dutch artist’s brother’s great grandson Willem van Gogh attended the garden’s opening day, which invited people to celebrate the new season.

The tulip bulbs that make up the flower mosaic were planted in October, with the display measuring an impressive 2,600 square feet. The flowers have been planted based on one of van Gogh’s self-portraits, and will be accompanied by a ‘Selfie Garden’ which was inspired by the artists love for painting himself.

‘The best day out among the flowers’

More than 800,000 visitors are expected to head to the gardens, until they close again on 17th May, including those in Amsterdam on river cruises in Europe. This year, over 7 million bulbs are expected to bloom, with flowers ranging from 800 different types of tulips to hyacinths and daffodils.

The van Gogh garden will be one of eight to be featured this year, and will include a maze for children, as well as one filled with herbs. There is also a garden dedicated to romance, which is described as "an idyllic garden containing bulb flowers in soft pastel shades, slowly transitioning into the surrounding woods."

The gardens will also include an exhibition called ‘Tulpomania’, which tells the history of the tulip craze experienced by the Netherlands in the 17th century. Now one of the country’s most famous imports, the tulips originally came from the north-western Himalaya, and are now widely associated with the Netherlands.

If you’re visiting the Keukenhof Gardens in the next week or so, make sure to tweet Emerald Waterways a photo of yourself in the Selfie Garden, using the hashtag #lovecruise and you could win an iPad! Find out more here.
