Ask the Expert: Your River Cruising Questions Answered

Whether you are completely new to river cruise holidays, or are venturing on a new class of ship for your upcoming holiday atop the waters, you’re bound to have a few questions before setting sail. To help answer these questions, Aftersales Co-Ordinator, Stacey Sanderson, has compiled a selection of the most commonly posed queries and given her two pennies’ worth.

How long do I get to spend ashore during a port visit? 

Port visit times vary depending on the destination and the itinerary of the cruise. We always try and provide plenty of time for our guests to absorb the culture of the port call, and all we ask is that you are back on-board 30 mins prior to our departure time.

Do Emerald Waterways cater for special diets/dietary requirements? 

We cater for most dietary requirements and allergies. All you need to do is inform our reservations team at the time of booking and they will ensure this is added to your booking. You will also be required to complete a medical declaration, which you do as part of your Trip Personaliser.

Do the ships sail through the night? 

On occasions we may have to sail throughout the night, depending on the demands of the itinerary. However, where possible, we try to ensure each sailing has day time cruising so you can enjoy the magnificent scenery as you traverse up and down the beautiful rivers. 

What currency is used for on-board purchases? 

Our on-board currency is Euro, however you may need to check the local currency used in the port visits in case you fancy securing a few souvenirs whilst on dry land. 

Can I smoke aboard Emerald Waterways ships? 

We have dedicated areas available to smoke on the ships’ outside decks, however we can’t always guarantee these areas will available at all times. Smoking is not permitted indoors on the ship or on balconies.

Is travel insurance included in the price? 

No, travel insurance isn't included in the price of your holiday.

Do Emerald Waterways ships offer wheelchair access? 

Our ships are able to carry guests who use wheelchairs. However, we do need to advise that whilst we do have a lift on-board this only services the Vista and Horizon decks. Any guests wishing to go to the Sun Deck will need to use the stairs. Also from time to time we may 'double dock' - meaning that guests may be required to pass from our ship to another river cruise vessel to disembark onto the portside, and this may involve climbing stairs.

Can I pick my embarkation and disembarkation port? 

We aim to be quite flexible with our cruise embarkation and disembarkation points. If you would like us to look into joining or leaving the ship in a port that isn't the designated start or visit point, please ask our reservations agents to find out if this would be possible.

How do I organise flights and transfers?

We include flights and transfers in all of our cruise packages, however certain regional departures may incur a supplement.
