Slovakia experiences fantastic tourism year in 2013

With stunning landmarks and a rich history to be discovered, it comes as little surprise that Slovakia is among the most popular destinations in all of Eastern Europe. This reputation has been backed up following the release of official tourism figures, which suggest that 4.049 million people visited the country in 2013 alone, indicating a 7.3 per cent rise on figures from 2012.

The figures also suggested that those who visited also stayed for longer, an average of 2.5 days more than last year. Collectively, the figures show that 2013 was Slovakia’s best year for tourism in the last five.

While domestic tourism makes up for over 60 per cent of the overall number of visitors, the increase in popularity of river cruises in Europe has helped tourists from Britain and other parts of Western Europe to discover beauty of the nation for themselves.

Another positive came in terms of revenue developed, with official figures from the National Bank of Slovakia stating that revenue coming from inbound tourism rose by 7.6 per cent to rest at €1.925 billion for the year.

Rise in visitors to Bratislava

One of the destinations that benefitted from this the most was Bratislava, with its prime location on the banks of the Danube River meaning that the city was enjoyed by 947,730 overnight visitors during 2013 – a rise of 15.1 per cent compared to 2012. Of that figure, over 647,000 came from abroad.

Tourism officials will be hoping that the increase can continue long into the future and with the increase of Danube river cruise holidays in 2015 operating through Bratislava, there is much to suggest that the tourism scene can continue prospering for many years to come.
