Prague's St Vitus Cathedral to gain new art work

The cathedral is already home to a number of important art works, with Koblasa’s creation joining pieces by the likes of fellow sculptors Josef Vaclav Myslbek and Frantisek Bilek on the floor of the religious building, to be unveiled on 17th November.

The cathedral is a well known work of gothic architecture and stands as the third religious building to have been constructed on the site. Visitors from all over the world come on specialist European river cruises and holidays to Prague with the intention of visiting this historic landmark. St Vitus is the seat of the Archbishop of Prague and became home to a large number of art works in the late 19th century and early 20th century following the building’s completion in 1929.

Koblasa has been a prominent figure in the Czech art world for some time and is known for his works of sculpture, painting and graphic design, as well as for being the author of a number of philosophical essays. Having been awarded the Medal for Merit in 2002 by the Czech Republic’s first president Vaclav Havel, the artist’s acclaimed reputation is only set to be further cemented by this latest honour.

Koblasa’s previous works have been displayed in countries around the world with pieces purchased by over 30 museums and collections globally. This latest sculpture will join the already extensive list of impressive creativity that is on show at the cathedral, with the structure itself also presenting a feat of great artistic vision.

The work in question, Resurrection, is set to provide another point of interest for visitors to the city of Prague, with the sculpture’s installation marking the Day of Fight for Freedom and Democracy on the 17th of this month.
