Amsterdam Light Festival to open this weekend

Architects and artists from all over the world have collectively designed more than 40 pieces of art to present the city in a different light over the festive season, which is freely accessible to all. The majority of these pieces will be previously unseen, as they have been created specifically for this event.

The Amsterdam Light Festival was recently recommended by The Guardian for being one of the most beautiful of its kind, mainly due to the unique experience which allows people to view the illuminations from the water. Boat tours aptly named Water Colours will take visitors, including those visiting Amsterdam while river cruising in Europe, along the river past artworks by acclaimed artists such as Jacques Rival, Angus Muir, and Alaa Minawi.

Lighting up the wintery scene of Amsterdam

On 11th December, a following 15 artworks will be added to the festival, as part of the light-up walking tour Illuminade, which can be found in the Plantage district of the capital city. Up and coming young talent such as Lisa van Noorden, Hagar Elazari, and Julian van Buul en Vincent Vriens are just a selection of the artists who have created experimental artworks for this element of the festival.

The Amsterdam Light Festival continually creates a fantastic atmosphere during the darkest months of the year and those attending the third edition will be able to marvel at projections on historical buildings, get involved with interactive artworks and view installations in public spaces. For more information on the festival, and other great things to see and do in Europe, see this past article on the secrets of Europe’s river ports.

Continuing until 18th January 2015, the Amsterdam Festival of Light can be enjoyed by those on river cruises with Emerald Waterways over the coming 50 days, for a wonderfully festive experience this winter.
