Germany: the world's literary capital in October

For those who are regulars on European river cruises, there will be even more to take advantage of during stop-offs in Germany in October and November. From readings to author meets, there are a number of Book Fair-related events planned which mean that autumn is set to be an exciting time to visit Germany.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is an international occasion that has been attracting trade visitors and the public alike for years. Usually held in the first few weeks of October, the event has been running for hundreds of years and is held by the German Publishers and Booksellers association.

If you are interested in literature, it is one of the must-see events of the calendar, with stands run by all major publishers, as well as lesser-known sellers, and is a place where guests can gain a thorough knowledge of industry updates. While the first three days are restricted to trade, the final two are open to the public, and this means that you can gain access to the largest trade fair of books and find out the very latest developments involving publishers, authors and specific books.

In addition to the fair, the literature festival Göttingen Literaturherbst, held in Würzburg, features live book readings from a range of famous and respected authors. Though you might have to brush up on your German, the festival is immensely popular and the ultimate cultural experience whilst you are visiting the area. Göttingen Literaturherbst runs from the 1 October until 30 November and focuses on international scientific and nonfiction literature. Having run since 1992, the festival is highly acclaimed and visited by both locals and visitors to the city.

The city of Würzburg has much to offer its visitors; whether you are stopping off on a cruise or an extended stay, there are a number of fascinating sights and attractions that are worth seeking out.
