Keeping you up to date on river cruise news

Here, we talk to Reservations Specialist, Sophie Pearson, about life at Emerald Waterways, and pick her brain for advice for first-time river cruisers.

At Emerald Waterways, we are thrilled to announce that Emerald Liberté, the third in our trio of new Star-Ships for 2017, was christened on Sunday 1st October in Lyon, France – marking the launch of our first dedicated French river ship.

Serenaded by the magical Douro, Porto is Portugal’s second city only in size - it rightfully stakes its claim as one of Europe’s  most desirable, unique and atmospheric destinations. Steeped in history, Porto was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and proudly illustrates a history spanning as far back as the 4th century BC through its rich collection of diverse, awe-inspiring monuments.

Providing a healthy challenge, Porto’s rolling landscape and climbing streets provide the perfect opportunity to see this quintessential urban paradise from a variety of perspectives – best served with a dash of Port, your Emerald Waterways Cruise Experts have mapped out the perfect itinerary to uncover this truly spectacular destination.

Divided by the majestic Danube, the city of Budapest is one of the great river-cruise destinations - the first or final call on a tour of some of Europe's most historic cities. Indeed, few rivers take in riches like the Danube. The Hungarian capital, which comprises the once-divided regions of Buda to the west and Pest to the east, remains a dual city defined by its great waterway - many of its most famous sites lined up alongside it. Passengers on Emerald Waterways, when moored opposite the neo-Gothic turrets and arches of the Hungarian Parliament have the elevated Bud Palace, once home to the kings of the Ottoman and Habsburg dynasties, and the beautiful, lush green Margaret Island already in view. It's a city worth getting up early and staying out late for: deciding between its cafés, bars and architectural delights, while learning of its fascinating past, is a difficult but not impossible task - here's how you could do it!
