Plenty to see in Avignon this autumn

National newspaper the Independent has reported on the great selection of cultural events taking place this autumn, giving readers a wide selection to choose from and add to their itinerary. From food festivals to art exhibitions there is plenty for guests of top European river cruises to explore this September in southern France.

Church, monasteries and ‘delectable tartines’

While the best river cruise holiday companies put together an extensive itinerary so that you don’t miss a thing in each destination en route, the Independent has detailed some fantastic temporary events and attractions for travellers to visit this September.

In this article, travel writer for the Independent Paul Bloomfield, described September as ‘Avignon's sweet spot’ where the weather is still enjoyable but the streets aren’t quite so jam-packed with tourists. This year, there is Les Luminessences d'Avignon until early October, a 3D production of the city’s history so visitors can get a real flavour for Avignon’s cultural and historical context during the space of their visit.

This is just one of the highlights of Avignon events, with others including the "Rêves d'un Collectionneur" ("A Collector's Dreams") exhibition at Musée Louis Vouland and the interesting "La disparition des Lucioles" ("The Disappearance of the Fireflies") which is showcasing in the old Sainte-Anne Prison as detailed in this French article. Bloomfield also describes other must-see attractions that are present in Avignon year-round, including the Eglise St-Pierre church, La Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction Carthusian monastery and ‘delectable tartines’ – toasted open sandwiches at Ginette et Marcel.

Emerald Waterways’ Delights of France river cruise is due to depart for the first time in 2015, where guests will be able to take in all of the sights of Avignon and its neighbouring cities and towns as well as similar fantastic events that take place throughout the year.
