Theatre in Prague could be renamed as Mozart Theatre

First opening back in 1873 under the label of the Nostitz Theatre, it’s today known as the Theatre of Estates and remains one of the most popular landmarks in the city – particularly for those looking to enjoy a river cruise in Europe.

The venue is where the great Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart conducted the premiere of Don Giovanni, making the Theatre of Estates the only existing theatre in the world where the legendary figure personally performed. Because of this, Culture Minister Daniel Hermann wants to rename it as the Mozart Theatre to further cement the link between the Czech capital and the famous composer.

One of the city’s most famous landmarks

While Mozart conducted Don Giovanni for the first time at the theatre in October 1787, he also featured on stage earlier that year to conduct the Marriage of Figaro – where it actually proved more popular than in Vienna. Hermann is hoping that the renaming of the theatre could be completed by next year, which is also the 260th anniversary of Mozart’s birth. However, he said that a change would not be enforced and there would be a consultation with the artistic community before a decision is reached.

Nora Dolanska, Director of the Prague City Tourism Agency, is in favour of the proposed renaming, saying “I'm convinced that for foreign tourists, a Mozart Theatre would be a clearer and a more comprehensible name than the Theatre of Estates.”
