Vienna Design Week to draw a big crowd

Putting on a number of events across the city of Vienna, the event is popular with both local residents and travelling visitors on autumn river cruise holidays stopping off in the Austrian capital.

Austria’s largest design festival

The festival, which is curated by journalist for architecture and design Lilli Hollein, is to enter into its eighth year when it takes place between the 26th September and the 5th October 2014. The festival acts as a platform for design and creative and at its heart is a group of selected designers, the Passionwege.

The Passionwege work with Viennese shops and traditional businesses to create an experimental collaboration in which, this year, the jeweller A. E. Köchert, the traditional shoemaker Rudolf Scheer & Söhne, the glassware specialist Lobmeyr, the Vienna Silver Factory, the glassmakers Stiefelmeyer and the upholstery company Stani will all be involved, among others.

The event concentrates on a different country each year and the 2014 instalment will be of particular interest to those passing through on 2014 Danube river cruises; it will focus on Hungarian-sourced design.

The festival aims to highlight the consumer-led nature that the world of design has now adopted while looking at design that has shaped our material culture, everyday life and influenced the public as consumers. In addition to this intriguing theme, the festival also offers two universities the chance to debut and exhibit their work each year, providing a chance for visitors to gain a unique insight into the next generation of designers who may very well inform future trends and movements.
