Vienna the second most liveable city in the world

Vienna at night

Vienna has been pipped to the post, coming in second place in the rankings for the world’s most liveable city in 2015.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) publish their liveability rankings every year, which has a top 10 that is regularly dominated by cities in Australia, Canada and Europe. This year there has been little change at the top, with Vienna coming in second place for the fifth year in a row.

The cities are all given a rating on the liveability scale, with one being the lowest and 100 the highest, representing the best quality of life. These ratings were calculated from a number of categories, including stability, healthcare and infrastructure.

Considerations for the cities as a holiday destination were also made, with discomfort of climate to travellers, food and drink, cultural availability and quality of public transport being indicators across a number of categories.

The top five cities and their scores are as follows:

  1. Melbourne, Australia, 97.5
  2. Vienna, Austria, 97.4
  3. Vancouver, Canada, 97.3
  4. Toronto, Canada, 97.2
  5. Adelaide, Australia; Calgary, Canada, 96.6

Visiting Vienna

Although common knowledge to those who have visited Vienna before, those who will be visiting the city for the first time on a 2015 or 2016 river cruise holiday have yet to see for themselves why the city is considered a great place to be. The city is home to some of the world’s best cultural institutions, including the Spanish Riding School, Vienna State Opera and Vienna State Ballet. Top museums include the Kunsthistorisches Museum and Naturhistorisches Museum, and history and architecture come together in the 150-year-old Ringstrasse, Imperial Palace and Schoenbrunn Palace.

The Local, an Austrian news site, has taken the opportunity to make some recommendations that could get the city in the top spot next year, including a suggested cap on the price of a melange – the famous Austrian coffee with milk foam, a must-try when visiting.
