Visitors toast the Budapest Wine festival

The Budapest Wine Festival, which was held from September 11 to September 15 this year, has been hailed as a huge success by organisers and visitors alike.

The event celebrated an array of Hungarian wines, as well as wine from Portugal, which was announced as this year’s guest nation.


Visitors at the event were given an insight into the history of Hungarian wines and wine production, and were given the chance to meet wine makers, taste gastronomic delicacies and listen to a variety of folk and classical music concerts.


This year’s festival saw more than 200 established wine distributors exhibit their wines at the event and also allowed young up and coming winemakers to show off their best flavours. The festival this year also welcomed tens of thousands of visitors overall, confirming its status as one of the premier annual Hungarian festivals.


So, if you are planning on river cruising in Europe in 2014, it may be worth arranging a trip to the Hungarian capital on September 11 to September 15, when next year’s wine festival is set to take place at Buda Castle Hill; this is a particularly great venue, as it offers fantastic views of the city and lies next to the quaint Danube River.


In addition to the wine festival, there was also a cheese festival, in which attendees tasted 15 cheeses from 15 different countries with well-established cheese making traditions. Entrants came from Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Ireland, Slovakia, Spain and the United Kingdom. The cheese-making contest, which was founded by SZEGA Foods, was judged by a panel of experts, with the winner being crowned the Favourite cheese of Hungary.
