Then it’s onwards to Mandrogi, a picturesque village on the river Svir. Dotted with colourful wooden houses called ‘izbas’, you’ll have the opportunity to admire traditional handicrafts and visit the Vodka Museum, to learn about one the country’s most famous exports.
Kizhi is your next port of call, where you will admire the tranquil waters of Lake Onega, Europe’s second-largest lake. Enjoy a walking tour of the Open-Air Museum of Architecture with its restored 18th-century wooden buildings and the Church of Transfiguration, built in 1714. In Goritsy, your included excursion takes you to the Monastery of this typically Russian village, associated with the infamous Ivan the Terrible. The Ancient city of Yaroslavl, with its many monuments as a reminder of a colourful past, is asking to be explored on your guided tour of the World Heritage-listed centre, taking in sites like the 12th-Century Saviour-Transfiguration Monastery, one of the oldest along the Volga River. And, in Uglich, you’ll embark on a walking tour of its many sites, including the Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood, built on the exact site where Ivan the Terrible’s son, Dmitry, was murdered.
Moscow is your impressive climax to an insightful week getting to know Russia. A sprawling metropolis with its famous architecture and 860-year-old history, the capital city is located on the banks of the Moskva and invites the opportunity for much exploration. On a guided tour, visit the Red Square, featuring the colourful St. Basil’s Cathedral, as well as the Lenin Mausoleum and the State Historical Museum. Add another dimension to your stay with a visit to the Museum of Cosmonautics to learn about the country’s accomplishments in space exploration, before a visit to the Kremlin invites you on a tour of the armoury, housing priceless weaponry, jewels and royal artefacts.
