The meticulously crafted itinerary includes a 3-night stay in the charming city of Aix-en-Provence, where you can enjoy the very best in Provencal charm, as well as an 8-day journey on the famous Rhône river, during which you’ll explore such destinations as Arles, Avignon, Viviers, Tournon and Lyon – savouring the wonders of Provence and the Côtes du Rhône on every day of your river cruise. Your home for the first three nights, Aix-en-Provence is a captivating heritage city that’s renowned as the birthplace of the post-Impressionist artist, Paul Cezanne. Trace the legacy of Cezanne at the Musée Granet or the Atelier Cézanne, or explore the city at your leisure, sampling the very best in French café culture. On day 4, we make for the Roman-age city of Arles, where you’ll step foot on-board Emerald Liberté, for the first time. Join a tour of the city’s renowned Romanesque architecture, visit Les Baux de Provence as part of an optional DiscoverMORE excursion, and enjoy a Provencale EmeraldPLUS dinner prepared on-board by a local chef. 11 Day Itinerary

  1. Day 1 - Arrival Nice - Aix-en-Provence

    You will be met at the airport in Nice and transferred to the quaint and remarkable Aix-en-Provence. The town is known as the birth place of Post-Impressionist artist Paul Cézanne. Included is a three-night stay.

  2. Day 2 - Aix-en-Provence

    You day will commence with an included tour through the leafy boulevards and public squares lined with 17th and 18th century mansions of Aix-en-Provence. There is much more to explore on this known Provencale jewel.

  3. Day 3 - Aix-en-Provence

    The day is yours at leisure to continue exploring, perhaps visit the Musée Granet or the Atelier Cézanne. Your hospitality representative is at your disposal to help you plan your journey.

  4. Day 4 - Aix-en-Provence - Arles

    This morning, depart from Aix-en-Provence and head to Arles where you will embark your Emerald Liberté Luxury ship. Tonight, enjoy a welcome reception and dinner on board.

  5. Day 5 - Arles

    Join your local guide for a walking tour showcasing the highlights of the city in particular the 2000-year-old Roman Amphitheatre still in use today, which was originally built to hold 20,000 spectators in the style of the Colosseum in Rome.

  6. Day 6 - Avignon

    Avignon has a rich history from Celtic beginnings to being the residence of the Popes and later central to the French Revolution. Although a fortified town, it is the Papal Palace which stands more secure on a hill in the centre of town; its walls are 17–18 feet thick. Your guided walk with a local guide takes you through this historic centre strolling the cobbled laneways and browsing the shops, overlooking the famous 'Pont d’Avignon'.

  7. Day 7 - Viviers

    Arrive in Viviers, a town which still has a lot of flare. Viviers is also the home of one of France’s oldest cathedrals, join an included city tour exploring all the architectural heritage of this quaint town.

  8. Day 8 - Tournon

    Join your local guide for a walking tour of Tournon, which is dominated by the 16th century castle and roman ruins, and is nestled in the valley near the steep slopes of le Massif Central, France's 3rd largest mountain range. The area has a long tradition in wine making, including the renowned wine growing centre of Tain l'Hermitage across the river.

  9. Day 9 - Lyon

    Lyon is France’s third largest city, a former Roman capital positioned at the conference of the Rhone and Saone rivers, which is steeped in history. Today take part on the guided tour of Lyon, which starts with a drive to the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière, Lyon’s hilltop church, with stunning views over the town. Then pass by the recently re–discovered Roman amphitheatre and walk through the cobbled streets of the gastronomic old town including the secret laneways. Alternatively, join a guided bike tour of Lyon.

  10. Day 10 - Chalon-Sur-Saône – Beaune

    Chalon–Sur–Saône is best known as the birthplace of photography and the centre of Burgundy’s wine region. Travel by road to the quaint village of Beaune, where we visit the Hospices de Beaune, one of the finest examples of French fifteenth–century architecture. Marvel at the multi–coloured roofs of this former hospital, now a museum, which has become one of the symbols of Burgundy.

  11. Day 11 - Lyon – UK

    After breakfast disembark your river cruise ship in Lyon and transfer to Airport for your onward or homebound flight.

    Your flight home is included in the price of your holiday. Please call us to check if we can offer your preferred airport. If you’d prefer not to fly, return travel via Eurostar is available.
