Who better to explore Portugal’s stunning wine region with than the marvelous Mary Berry? The Douro, which runs through one of Europe’s most beautiful stretches of countryside, is one of her favourite destinations and there’s no better way to see it than on our wonderful Emerald Waterways river cruise. “I can see why people are so taken with river cruising,” says Mary. “As someone who is fascinated by travel, culture and food destinations, I think it’s the perfect way to experience them plus Portugal’s Douro valley, which has remained unchanged for centuries, is a real hidden gem.” Mary will join you on the Emerald Radiance, a luxury ship custom-built to navigate the Douro. Your wonderful itinerary, which starts and ends in the ancient city of Porto, includes the chance to visit some of the region’s best Port producing wineries. There will be plenty of opportunities to sample some of the finest vintages as well as visit the brilliant Douro Museum where you’ll discover all you’ve ever wanted to know about the region’s wine-making heritage. You’ll also get to visit the ancient Spanish city of Salamanca and have time to wander around the grand squares and lively tapas bars. Mary Berry

Food writer and TV presenter With over 60 years of cooking experience, Mary Berry is considered to be the doyenne of British baking. 
She trained at the prestigious Cordon Bleu in Paris at the age of just 17, and quickly established herself as a leading cookery writer and broadcaster. She has published over 70 cookery books. In 2012 she received a CBE for her contribution to the culinary arts.

8 Day Itinerary

  1. Day 1 - Arrival Porto

    Welcome to Porto. You will be met at the airport and transferred to the ship where a warm welcome awaits you from your Captain and crew as you board your luxury Emerald Radiance river cruise ship. Tonight enjoy dinner on board with your fellow travelers. Your Cruise Director will also conduct a port talk to review the activities and itinerary for the days ahead.

  2. Day 2 - Porto – Pinhao

    Today enjoy a full day sailing the windy turns and twists of the Douro Valley. A UNESCO world heritage site this area is sparsely populated by small quaint villages and typical communities working vineyards and small farms. Your Cruise Director will also host a lecture on board showcasing the history and wine culture of the region. Later this afternoon arrive in the village of Pinhao which is situated on a river bend surrounded by terraced hillsides producing some of the world’s best Port. Tonight your captain will be delighted to host the welcome dinner and cocktail reception.

  3. Day 3 - Pinhao - Vega de Terron

    Today you will have a choice to visit the marvelous baroque village of Lamego and the picturesque Our Lady of Remedies Sanctuary where history stands still. Alternatively, take part on a guided hike through local vineyards. Return to your ship for lunch and an afternoon sailing to Vega de Terron, your gateway into Spain.

  4. Day 4 - Salamanca

    Founded in Roman times, the city of Salamanca is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, the seat of the Spanish language, and still a lively student town. Board your coach this morning in Vega de Terron and travel to this beautiful golden city for a guided walking tour passing through its grand squares and medieval structures, where you will feel like stepping back in time. Tapas bars feature on every street and traditional Spanish music trickles out of buzzing bars and restaurants. You will also have plenty of free time to explore independently before returning to the ship later this afternoon.

  5. Day 5 - Pocinho

    This morning arrive in Pocinho and either embark on an excursion to the Coa Valley Museum or take part on the Emerald Active canoeing experience. The Coa Valley Museum is a concrete structure that details pre-historic stone carvings made by the early inhabitants of the Douro, which were uncovered during the construction of the nearby dam. Later return to your ship for lunch and enjoy your idyllic surroundings as you sail towards Regua.

  6. Day 6 - Regua

    This morning you will visit the former roman settlement of Regua. After the village tour, visit the Douro Museum for a look at wine making in the region. This afternoon, Mary Berry will join you on-board for a delicious afternoon tea and pastry tasting. You will also hear tales from her career and discover insights from her much-loved BBC series during an informal Q&A session.

  7. Day 7 - Porto

    Located at the mouth of the Douro River, Porto is a fascinating eclectic mix of modern and ancient architecture. Its most famous export is of course fortified wine, and the hillside across from the city centre features numerous wine caves and tasting boutiques in the area of Vila Nova de Gaia. This afternoon, join Mary Berry for an exclusive book signing and receive a complimentary copy of her latest publication. This evening, join Mary & your fellow Guests for a 4-course Mary Berry inspired Farewell Gala Dinner.
