The Hungarian capital, Budapest, is lovingly referred to as the Queen of the Danube by locals and loyal visitors who return year after year to enjoy the city’s splendour, beautiful architecture and unique culture. A combination of the formerly separate and distinct districts of Buda and Pest, the city is home to a vibrant mixture of culture and style – with surprises and delights waiting around every corner.
With the intent of always delivering you right to the very heart of the cities and regions we visit, the Emerald Waterways team have created a series of videos to help you make the very most of a morning, afternoon and evening in beautiful Budapest.
Waking up in Budapest, there are almost endless ways to invest your day. We’ve picked just three of our favourite things to do in the Hungarian capital, early in the day.
The Roman baths of Budapest are beloved by locals and visitors alike, with the larger and more prominent bathhouses drawing sizeable crowds. But for those in the know, Veli Bej is the quietest and most peaceful of all the public baths in the city. Not a part of the official Budapest Baths Network, the gorgeous Turkish bath actually belongs to a hospital so remains delightfully reserved for the fortunate few aware of its existence.
The comprehensive menu at Villa Bagatelle has more than a little French inspiration with delightful pastries and continental offerings available. The Eggs Bagatelle is perhaps the standout entry on the menu, a wonderful combination of poached eggs, bacon and cheese sauce on a homemade, toasted bun.
Margaret Island is positioned in the middle of the Danube, and offers 1.6 miles of beautifully landscaped parks and green stretches. The fascinating little island is full of memorials, statues and fountains, and even boasts a small zoo featuring exotic waterfowl.
The old streets of Budapest open up a wondrous array of cultural experiences for new visitors. We’ve shared three of our favourite things to do in the afternoon during a long stopover in Budapest with an Emerald Waterways river cruise.
Dedicated to the art nouveau designs and styles found throughout Hungary, The House of Hungarian Art Nouveau provides an in-depth insight into many of the architectural and interior design delights of Budapest. Full of contemporary furnishings and decorative objects, the small museum is charmingly set out for a glimpse into authentic Hungarian life.
Discover Budapest’s golden age during the 19th and 20th centuries in the Róth Miksa Múzeum. As prosperity and opportunity grew in the Hungarian capital, artists and writers visited the city in great numbers, creating many wonderful pieces of art to capture the delightful time period.
After exploring the culture of the city, there is no finer reward than a locally baked cake and wonderful coffee from the Dunapark Coffee House. With views across the Danube onto Margaret Island, the café is perfect to sit and reflect on this wonderful city.
As another delightful day in Budapest draws to a close, we’ve picked three great ways to end the day. Two of Emerald Waterways river cruise itineraries, Splendours of Europe and Danube Delights, include an overnight stay in Budapest, giving you the chance to enjoy the wonderful nightlife.
As the sun starts to set in Budapest, head to the Aria Hotel and its roof top terrace. With some of the best views over this beautiful city, the music-themed hotel hits all the right notes with its extensive cocktail menu.
Even as its reputation and popularity soars, the wonderful Zeller Bistro manages to retain a homely and authentic feel thanks largely to the welcoming owners, Anna and Péter. Specialising in sourcing fresh, local produce to create Hungarian delights; the restaurant proves popular with both locals and visitors.
The thriving jazz scene provides a spectacular end to a day in Budapest. Opus Jazz Bar regularly hosts performances from the very best Hungarian jazz performers and music artists from all around the world.
