Staff Stories: Dan

Meet our experts behind the scenes

Welcome to the first edition of our new feature, Staff Stories! Toward the end of last year we sent our copywriter, Dan Jones, on a three-night jaunt from Vienna to Budapest as part of our Danube Delights itinerary. Dan soon discovered why this cruise remains one of our most popular. Of course, we wanted to hear what he thought of his journey so we asked him a few questions on how he found his first Emerald Waterways cruise...

What was your cruise highlight?

I woke up especially early on our penultimate day to take in the Budapest skyline as we cruised into the city – what a spectacular sight! We were lucky enough to dock directly opposite the Parliament Building. (see opposite)

What was your favourite part of the ship?

The pool and cinema area is a very chilled space. It’s really tranquil throughout the day, and I enjoyed kicking back with an espresso in those comfy lounger chairs.

What was the most surprising part of your cruise?

Bratislava. I had very little knowledge of the Slovakian capital, nor did I know what to expect, but it was a suitably charming and intimate city. The Old Town was especially quaint and quirky.

Why would you recommend this cruise?

The Danube Delights itinerary is the perfect introduction to what river cruising can offer. Historic cities, traditional cultures and a mixture of natural and manmade sights. You’ll enjoy insightful days ashore and indulgent nights on board – what more could you ask for?

Why do you think Emerald Waterways are exceptional value for money?

It’s a combination of things. There’s the delicious wine and diverse food, exciting daily shore excursions, all your travel is taken care of, and the ship’s facilities mean you always have something to do, whether you’re relaxing on your balcony or taking a dip in the pool. Guests can make full use of the on-board bikes when you dock in your destination and there’s also free tea and coffee available throughout the day. Quite simply, it’s all taken care of when you travel with Emerald Waterways.

Why do you think river cruising is increasing in popularity?

It was really liberating to wake up in a new place every morning – new sights, new cultures, new people. You also dock right in the heart of the action, and unlike ocean cruising it’s so swift and easy; there’s no big queues to get off the ship or extra-long bus journeys to the closest city.
