Read about Jeremy's journey along the upper part of the famous Danube river

Welcome to our second edition of Staff Stories where we bring you more tales from the river Danube, this time focusing on the upper section of the famous river in Germany and Austria. Jeremy Shepherd, one of most experienced cruise experts, gives us his story on his first Emerald Waterways river cruise and why he believes river cruising is becoming increasingly popular.

Which cruise did you travel on?

I cruised through Germany and Austria aboard the Emerald Sun on the Danube Delights cruise.

What was your cruise highlight?

My personal favourite was a day excursion to Ceský Krumlov. This beautiful UNESCO-listed Czech town was so quaint, filled with culture and beautiful architecture spanning Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Whilst here we also had an authentic dinner and got the chance to meet some of the locals from the surrounding community - a lovely touch that offered a really unique insight into the town.

What was the most surprising part of your cruise?

The amount of space per guest. You really do not realise how big the ships are until you’re on board. Not only are the communal areas light and airy with plenty of seating, but the suites are surprisingly spacious too. I was lucky enough to spend the duration of the cruise in cabin 216. This Panorama Balcony Suite on the Vista Deck was comfortable, well-equipped and featured an indoor balcony – perfect for watching the endless scenery.

What was your favourite part of the ship?

The dining offered on board. Every single meal that we had was above and beyond expectations. Emerald Waterways really take the time to embrace the local cuisine and flavours of the region. For example, in Regensburg we had a Bavarian buffet-style lunch and I can honestly say it was one of the nicest meals I have ever had. What’s more, there was always so much choice, so there’s something to suit every palette, regardless of your culinary preferences.

Why would you recommend this cruise?

This is a great cruise for anyone looking to visit some of Europe’s most popular (and unknown) towns and cities. Each day you get to wake up in a new destination with plenty of included excursions to look forward to. Think of it as an introduction to the Europe of yesteryear.

Why do you think Emerald Waterways are exceptional value for money?

There are so many features and highlights that make cruising with Emerald Waterways amazing value for money. EmeraldPLUS experiences (and there’s at least one of these enhanced excursions every cruise) complement the included onshore excursions perfectly, offering a real in-depth insight into the local culture of the region.

When cruising on an Emerald Star-Ship you can also expect a lot of envious glances from those not lucky enough to be sailing on Emerald’s super sleek vessels. In a world where familiarity and likeness dominates, Emerald Waterways stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Why do you think river cruising is increasing in popularity?

The word is spreading like wildfire. With river cruise ships now featuring unique innovations and cutting-edge facilities, people are beginning to realise that these modern vessels offer a new and comfortable way to travel through the heart of Europe. Itineraries are filled with included experiences, you visit a new destination almost every day and you’re always surrounded by some sort of scenery, unlike ocean cruising which can often mean days spent at sea.

Suites are becoming more spacious and luxurious, the majority of cabins now come with their own conservatory-style balconies and you’ll always find something to interest you during your excursions and free time. If you like to travel in style but also have an appetite for adventure, a river cruise is going to be perfect for you.
